(Photo via Twitter/Selena Gomez)We've known this
for a while
about Vanessa Hudgens, but now Selena Gomez also seems to have
outgrown her former squeaky-clean Disney persona. Both former Disney
Channel television show stars have leading roles in a gritty take on
vacationing young women in "Spring Breakers."
A new clip from the film (below) shows a barely recognizable bleached
blonde Hudgens motioning as if to be shooting a gun -- eventually
turning it on herself -- and a disillusioned Gomez, complaining about
her "sad" neighborhood surroundings.
It's no wonder -- the film is written and directed by the same guy
who wrote 1995's shocking depiction of under-aged sex-and-drugs in the
critically-acclaimed film "Kids" -- starring a young Chloë Sevigny and
Rosario Dawson. Harmony Korine wrote "Kids" at the age of 19 and now
nearly 20 years later, he revisits his penchant for portraying troubled
youth in "Spring Breakers."
Then: Disney stars Selena Gomez ("The Wizards of Waverly Place") and Vanessa Hudgens ("High School Musical")
A far cry from "The Wizards of Waverly Place," on which Gomez, 20,
starred until earlier this year -- not to mention 23-year-old Hudgens'
former "
High School Musical"
stomping grounds -- these former Disney starlets are going in an
entirely different direction in the upcoming Korine film, debuting at
the Venice Film Festival next week on September 5.
Other good girls gone bad in "Spring Breakers" include "Glee" star Heather Morris, who
wears a nose ring and has crossed eyes in the film, and "Pretty Little Liars" popular girl Ashley Benson.
The film revolves around a group of college girls who get arrested
after robbing a restaurant to get money for their spring break trip.
They wind up being asked to do the dirty work of a drug and weapons
dealer, played by James Franco -- who, by the way,
sports braids in the film.
